They swept our chimney for the first three years that we owned our house. It wasn't until my Aunt's house almost burned down due to a chimney fire that I learned that the sweep is supposed to actually get on the roof and brush the chimney out.
When we got our chimney swept the following year by a different sweep they said they were surprised we hadn't had a fire considering the clogged state of our chimney.
