Chancellor Street Co-operative Preschool is an amazing community of teachers, parents, and children that has been a Charlottesville institution for over forty years. I have met C-street alumni whose own children have now graduated from the school. We have sent all three of our children to the school and loved every minute of it.
This is a "co-op" preschool, which means the parents are the owners, employees, board, and administrators. Every parent has a job and every family takes turns helping out in the classroom. The result is a group of parents that truly want to be involved in their children's education, and put their own time and energy behind that. As a side effect, it also makes C-street the best preschool bargain in town, since the two (amazing, wonderful) teachers are the only employees. The play-based curriculum is described on the "Philosophy" page of their website. The indoor and outdoor facilities are rich, inviting, and fun, and full to bursting with activities that the teachers rotate throughout the year as they progress through various themes.
C-street rents space in the education annex of St. Paul's Church but is not otherwise affiliated with the church (or any religious faith). It is a half-day preschool and children can go three, four, or five days a week. Financial aid is available.
